Abstract
As the global demand for shrimp grows and its economic value rises, farmers in many countries are cultivating shrimp for its economic benefits. The Vietnamese government encourages shrimps farming, which has helped farmers to earn higher incomes. Although industrially produced feed, chemicals, and antibiotics are used in shrimp-farming, the knowledge and experience of farmers is essential because shrimps are cultivated by human hand. This paper examines the meanings of knowledge and the interaction of knowledge and experience in modern production, such as shrimp-farming, by analyzing the way in which farmers acquire knowledge and apply it to the process of shrimp-farming. Farmers in Vietnam make a distinction between “external knowledge, such as technologies in shrimp culture and information about goods” and “their experience”. The former includes theories and skills that set a direction for the culture of shrimps. The latter is what farmers gain from the production activities and this differs for each situation and each farmer. Farmers grow shrimps based on the knowledge but, since each farm has a different natural environment, this doesn’t produce the same result everywhere. As a result, farmers modify the method of shrimp culture according to local conditions and, as such, they gain their experience. In general, it is stated that the knowledge is de-contextual, universal and applicable to every shrimp farm, while farmers’ experience is contextual. However, knowledge constantly interacts with experience in the process of farming and transforms constantly, and also new knowledge is formed in the process as science and technology develop through dispute and discussion. Therefore, knowledge and experience are both part of the generative process and they are both contextual.
