보수주의 측정치로 널리 알려진 Basu(1997) 이익지속성 모형과 주가수익률 모형, Ball and Shivakumar(2008) 모형, Givoly and Hayn(2000) 모형, 그리고 Khan and Watts(2009) 모형을 사용해 보수주의를 측정한다.
Abstract
This paper aims to verify the relationship between debt characteristics and conservatism. This research examines whether the conservative nature of the firms differ depending on which financing method the firms choose between bank loans as private debt and corporate bonds as public debt. Corporate bonds are financed by an unspecified number of the general public while bank loans are provided by a small number of financial institutions such as bank. In case of loans, contract may be able to be amended by the agreement with the financial institutions, however, it is close to impossible for corporate bonds. There may be a free-rider problem to corporate bonds, since its creditors are unspecified number of general public, therefore, information cost can be greater than loans. As creditors for bank loans, financial institutions may directly oversee the firms or protect themselves with various provisions. Typically, financial institutions will have excellent capability of collecting and analyzing information than those who invest in corporate bonds. Consequently, it is expected the firms that borrow a lot from financial institutions should be conservative in accounting since these firms are aware of it and they are under the supervision of institutions. Samples of this research are 9,099 companies whose fiscal year ends in December 2005 to 2014 and listed in the Korea Exchange. Financial companies are excluded. Conservatism is measured by well-known conservatism measure, Basu(1997) earnings persistence model and stock return model, Ball and Shivakumar(2008) model, Givoly and Hayn(2000) model, and Khan and Watts(2009) model. To verify that the firms that use bank loans more than corporate bonds are more conservative in accounting, dummy variable and continuous variable were used in analysis which refers to when the loan balance is greater than the corporate bond balance based on the ending balance on the statement of financial position. In addition, continuous variables and dummy variable which refers to the change in the loan balance comparing with the previous period is greater than the change in the corporate bond balance. The result of most of the analysis using conservatism measurement model shows that the firms use loans are more conservative than those issue corporate bonds when it comes to accounting treatment in both balance and change in balance. The empirical findings in this study provide a new understanding of that degree of conservatism may differ depending on the characteristics of debt since it has been rarely studied whilst some research has been carried out on other accounting characteristics such as earnings management by financing types. This paper also has practical implications that it draws bond investors’ attention showing that the firms may be less conservative in accounting. Financial analysts and credit rating agencies need careful analysis of financial statements which was not treated conservatively in the evaluation of the firms that issued bonds. In addition, external auditors will need to put proper number of associates and audit hours when auditing the firms that issued bonds considering that these firms may not be conservative enough in accounting.
