Abstract
The purpose of this study was to identify the difference in children's reading ability of environmental print and vocabulary ability by their family income. And, it was to identify the relationships between children's reading ability of environmental print and vocabulary ability. The subjects were 120 children, who can not read letters, aged 3 to 4 years, from child-care centers located in Seoul, Gyeong-gi areas. The Children's Reading Ability Environmental Print Scale(Son, 2012) was used to measure children's reading ability of environmental print. For the children's vocabulary ability, this study used the Receptive Expressive Vocabulary Test, developed by Kim et al,.(2009). The data was analyzed by t-test and Pearson's correlations. First, the more family income level were high, the more children could read in the environmental print task. Second, there was a significant difference by children's family income in their receptive and expressive vocabulary ability. Third, children's environmental print ability was positively correlated with receptive, expressive vocabulary ability. Furthermore, in the low-income group, there was a significant relationship between children's environmental print reading ability and receptive·expressive vocabulary ability. And in the middle-income group, children's reading ability of environmental print was positively correlated with expressive vocabulary ability. This study suggested that we actively applied environmental print as educational materials for children who were in progress in vocabulary ability as well as literacy development.
