Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate whether working mothers’ depression influences their children’s executive function difficulty. It also examines whether parenting behaviors (authoritative, authoritarian, and permissive parenting) mediate the relationship between the mothers’ depression and the children’s executive function difficulty. The 10th wave data of Panel Study on Korean Children and structural equation modeling were used to analyze these structural associations. The results showed that mothers’ depression, authoritative parenting behaviors, authoritarian parenting behaviors, and permissive parenting behaviors predicted the children’s executive function difficulty. The authoritarian and permissive parenting behaviors mediated the relationship between the mothers’ depression and the children’s executive function difficulty. Also, the permissive parenting behaviors mediated the relationship between the mothers’ work-parenting conflicts and the children’s executive function difficulty. The results of this study can be used in the development of programs that improve working mothers’ mental health and the work-parenting balance.
