Abstract
This study aims to investigate how the depressive symptoms of married parents of school-aged children have changed before and during the COVID-19 pandemic and whether such association has been mediated by changes in spousal relationship satisfaction. Using the Korean Welfare Panel Study conducted from 2019 to 2021(14th to 16th waves), we selected 1,089 married parents (539 fathers and 550 mothers) whose coresident youngest children were of school age during the survey period. All data were modeled using fixed effects panel regression models. We found that fathers’ depressive symptoms significantly increased in the second year of the pandemic compared to the pre-pandemic period. Meanwhile, mothers’ depressive symptoms significantly increased in both the first and second years of the pandemic compared to the pre-pandemic period. Moreover, mothers’ spousal relationship satisfaction decreased in the second year of the pandemic compared to the pre-pandemic period and partially mediated the association between the COVID-19 outbreak and changes in depressive symptoms. Our findings contribute to the literature by highlighting the long-lasting negative effects of the pandemic on depressive symptoms among parents. We also suggest that parent education or consultation programs be implemented to improve spousal relationships, as this could relieve mothers’ depressive symptoms.
