본 연구의 목적은 아랍에미리트에 거주하며 영유아자녀를 둔 어머니의 육아경험에 귀기울이고 그 속에 담겨진 의미를 보다 심층적으로 기술하고 이해하는 데 있다. 이를 위해 어머니 3인을 심층 면담하여 자료를 수집하였고, 이를 분석함에 있어 질적연구방법을 활용하였다. 연구참여자들은 한국과는 다른 출산, 산후조리 문화를 경험하였고, 자녀와 오롯이 함께 하는 시간이 많아지며 고군분투하고 있었으며, 아이돌보미를 통해 육아하는 주변 사람들과는 달리 어머니들이 직접 육아를 해야 한다는 생각을 실천하고 있었다. 또한 많은 한국부모들이 자녀의 영어습득을 중요시하고 있지만 연구참여자들은 영어보다 중요한 것이 있다고 느끼고 있었고, 해외에 거주하는 엄마의 적응, 행복 또한 중요함을 경험하고 있었다. 그들은 오랜 시간 살아가며 살고 있는 그 곳이 집이라 여기고 있었지만, 앞으로 자녀들이 어느 곳에서 살아가게 될지 확정된 것이라 아니라 걱정 또한 안고 있었다. 본 연구를 통해 드러난 경험의 주요 의미는 ‘고군분투하는 육아 속에서 자신을 사랑하며 부모됨 실천하기’, ‘탈영토화와 재영토화의 과정, 그리고 또다시 경험되어질 수 있는 불확실성’, ‘자녀의 모국어 유지를 위한 노력’, ‘복수적인 문화적 정체성 구성해나가기’로 드러났다. 본 연구는 아랍에미리트에서 살아가는 영유아자녀를 둔 어머니의 경험과 이를 통해 생성된 의미를 심층적으로 탐구하였다는 데 연구의 의의가 있다. 조기유학의 목적이 아닌 해외거주의 유형과 이주지가 다양해지는 지금, 이들의 이야기를 통해 다양한 삶의 모습에 대한 이해와 존중이 함께 해야 함을 깨닫게 될 것이라 보여진다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to look into the parenting experiences of mothers with young children living in the United Arab Emirates and to describe and understand the meaning contained in them in more depth. The experiences revealed through this study included experiencing a childbirth and postpartum care culture that was different from Korea, struggling with the increased time spent solely with their children, and putting into practice the idea that mothers should raise their children themselves. Also, although many Korean parents value their children's acquisition of English, the research participants felt that there was something more important than English, and they also experienced the importance of mothers' adaptation and happiness while living abroad. They considered the place where they lived for a long time as their home, but they were also worried because it was not certain where their children would live in the future. The main meanings of the experiences revealed through this study were ‘practicing parenting while loving oneself in the midst of difficult parenting’, ‘the process of deterritorialization and reterritorialization, and the uncertainty that can be experienced again’, ‘efforts to maintain the child’s native language’, and ‘constructing multiple cultural identities’. The significance of this study lies in its in-depth exploration of the experiences of mothers with young children living in the United Arab Emirates and the meanings created through them.
