Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the individual and sequential mediating effects of smartphone dependency and depression in the relationship between inconsistent parenting and somatization symptoms among adolescents. For this purpose, data from 2,541 first-year middle school students (1,375 boys and 1,166 girls) were drawn from the 2018 Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey (KCYPS) and analyzed using SPSS 29.0 and AMOS 29.0. The results were as follows. First, inconsistent parenting was positively correlated with adolescents’ smartphone dependency, depression, and somatization symptoms. In addition, both smartphone dependency and depression showed positive correlations with somatization symptoms, and a significant positive correlation was also found between smartphone dependency and depression. Second, the mediating effects of smartphone dependency and depression were significant in the positive relationship between inconsistent parenting and adolescents’ somatization symptoms. Specifically, higher levels of inconsistent parenting were associated with increased smartphone dependency and depression, which subsequently heightened somatization symptoms through both independent and sequential pathways. These findings suggest that interventions targeting the reduction of smartphone dependency and depression may be effective in preventing somatization symptoms among adolescents who experience inconsistent parenting.
