Abstract
The purpose of this study is to identify the types of perceptions of independence from parents among college students and to analyze the characteristics of each type. To solve the research problem of this study, Q methodology was utilized. First, we conducted a literature review on independence from parents and interviewed college students enrolled in a four-year university, and finally selected 38 Q statements. Fifty-five male and female college students were selected as P-samples and asked to classify all the Q-sample statements on an 11-point scale according to a normal distribution, and the collected data were subjected to factor analysis using the PQMethod. As a result of the analysis, three types of perceptions of independence from parents by college students were derived. Type 1 was "self-directed type", which means that they perceive independence as having their own life goals and doing things about themselves. Type 2 was "social norm type", where independence from parents was perceived as an essential part of becoming a true adult. Type 3 was the "interdependent type", which perceives independence as moving toward an interdependent relationship with parents. The results of this study can be used as a useful resource to support college students who experience difficulties in the process of independence from their parents
