Abstract
This paper examines the values of the characters in the ecological SF narrative “Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind” and interprets them as a conflict between the “Anthropocene” and the “Alternative Anthropocene.” The study begins by conceptualizing the “Anthropocene” and the “Alternative Anthropocene” through an examination of “terraforming,” a crucial motif that defines the genre identity of “Nausicaä” as an SF narrative. By reviewing the discussions of Bruno Latour and Donna Haraway, which have been significant in the discourse on the Anthropocene, and applying their theories, the study analyzes the characters of the Empire people and the Anthropocene people, who are Nausicaä's “philosophical adversaries” with differing values, as characters possessing Anthropocentric values. These values are then contrasted with Nausicaä's values for an oppositional interpretation. Furthermore, drawing on the fact that terraforming is presented as a critical task to be performed in the development of the narrative, the study interprets the opposition between “Anthropocenic terraforming” and “Alternative Anthropocenic terraforming.” Through this analysis, the paper argues that Nausicaä's worldview has an Alternative Anthropocenic character that seeks to break away from anthropocentrism.
