Abstract
One of the key topics defining 21st-century South Korean society is ‘multiculturalism’, which often involves issues concerning various ethnic groups. Among them, the case of North Korean defectors is particularly noteworthy. Their lives are characterized by a unique specificity, as they exist in a paradoxical state: being members of the same nation yet holding different ideologies, eliciting both sympathy and animosity, and being simultaneously citizens and refugees. While the figures of North Korean defectors, othered and pushed to the periphery away from the center of South Korean society, have been represented in various novels, existing research has predominantly focused on their diasporic identity, trauma, or the issue of division, only partially mentioning their labor issues. This indicates a lack of analysis on how the labor performed by North Korean defectors functions as a core element in recovering their subjectivity. Therefore, this study analyzes Kang Hee-jin’s novels 『Ghost』 and 『Poppy』, which prominently feature characters who have failed to adapt to South Korean society, to examine the meaning of labor for North Korean defectors who cannot belong to the mainstream. In the novels, most North Korean defectors are alienated and othered, surviving through labor on the periphery or in the liminal spaces. This is sometimes represented by the perception that their social status is equivalent to that of the lowest class of South Koreans. However, they regain their subjectivity while continuing their existence through informal labor situated on the border between legality and illegality. This is made possible by the ambiguity of their occupations. Their jobs are often located on this border, which corresponds to the reality of defectors who wish to become South Korean citizens but cannot obtain decent jobs in the formal sector. Yet, for them, even slightly crossing this ambiguous boundary can lead to ruin, which paradoxically proves how precarious and yet essential the borderline of this “ambiguous labor” was as a space for survival. As such, Kang Hee-jin’s novels not only portray the reality of North Korean defectors but also highlight the value of labor in the recovery of subjectivity. Labor situated on the boundary, through its ambiguity, can bestow greater value upon individuals from specific social strata. By shedding light on unconventional occupations, it redefines the concept of labor in modern society, which has often been perceived merely as a means of accumulating capital.
