대학생의 학업성취도 향상과정에 대한 근거이론 연구

본 연구는 괄목할 만큼 학업성취도가 향상된 대학생들의 경험과 과정의 의미를 밝히고 학업성취도 향상에 대한 과정이론을 발견하기 위해 Strauss와 Corbin(1998)의 근거이론방법을 적용하였으며 충북 소재 K대학 학생 중 학기당 가장 큰 폭으로 성적이 향상된 이에게 주는 ‘괄목상대 장학금’ 대상자들을 이론적 표집하여 총 8명의 참여자를 대상으로 연구를 진행하였다. 자료는 1:1면담과 집단면담으로 수집하였으며 지속적 비교방법으로 분석하였는데 이는 개방코딩→축코딩→선택코딩→상황모형 개발의 순으로 이루어졌으며 개방코딩을 통해 발견한 398개의 개념과 67개의 하위범주, 그리고 16개의 범주를 분석에 사용하였다. 연구결과 학업성취도 향상과정의 중심현상은 ‘깨달음을 통해 악순환에서 벗어나기’로 파악되었다. 즉 대학생들의 학업성취도 향상과정은 단순한 학점의 상승이 아닌, 참여자들이 상황을 부정하고 바닥을 경험하며 끝없이 방황하던 과거에서 벗어나기 위해 자신과 주변 환경의 긍정, 부정적 인식을 탐색하여 결국 ‘깨달음을 통해 악순환에서 벗어나 학업성취를 달성하고 새로운 나를 발견하게 되는 과정’이라 할 수 있었다. 이러한 생태체계적 접근은 개인과 환경의 상호작용의 결과로 볼 수 있는 학업성취도 향상에 적절한 도움이 되는 통합적 교육과정 개발에 근거 이론으로 이용될 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
In order to identify the meaning of the experience and process of university students who have had a significant improvement in academic achievement and to discover the process theory on improvement in academic achievement, this research applied the grounded theory method of Strauss and Corbin (1998). The sample consisted of 8 participants, theoretically sampled from students of K University located in Chungcheongbuk-do Province who received “Great Achievement (刮目相對) Scholarship,” a scholarship given to students who have achieved the biggest academic improvement each semester. Data was collected through one-on-one interview and group interview, and was analyzed with the constant comparative method, in the order of open coding, axial coding, selective coding and then the development of situational model. 398 concepts and 67 sub-categories and 16 categories discovered through open coding was used in the analysis. The results showed that the centering phenomenon of the process of academic improvement was “breaking out of the vicious cycle through enlightenment.’ In other words, the academic improvement of the university students wasn’t a simply an improvement in their grades, but rather the process of the participants denying the situation and exploring the positive and negative perceptions of themselves and their environment to break out of their past, where they experienced rock bottom and endlessly wandered about, and eventually ‘breaking out of the vicious cycle through enlightenment and discovering their new selves.’ Such ecosystematic approach can be used as a grounded theory to develop various interventions and programs that appropriately help academic improvement, which can be viewed as a result of the interaction between individuals and their environment.
