Abstract

Hwigyeongwon is the tomb of Lady Yu, Bak, a concubine of King Jeongjo and the mother of King Sunjo. It is the first example of a tomb intentionally designed as a garden. In Hwigyeongwon, there are 24 stone artifacts associated with the tomb, including both the stoneware of Hwigyeongwon and those surrounding the tomb. There are a total of 40 stone artifacts (excluding the base stones), comprising 16 ritual decorative stone sculptures and stone statues around the tomb. The primary stone type used in the stoneware of Hwigyeongwon is biotite granite. This includes medium-grained biotite granite, which constitutes most of the stoneware, coarse-grained pink biotite granite for the cornerstones of the burial mound, and light gray medium-grained biotite granite for the capstone. Magnetic susceptibility analysis of the stoneware in Hwigyeongwon revealed a mixture of granite types, specifically magnetite granite and titanomagnetite granite. This indicates the use of diverse stones in constructing the tomb mound. The conservation status investigation confirmed that the surface of the tomb stoneware has been deteriorated by repair materials, and the tomb stone statues have suffered damage due to granular decomposition. Surface discoloration was found to be the most significant damage to both the tomb stoneware and stone statues, with yellowing and soil accumulation as the primary causes. Biological damage was identified as the main pattern of deterioration in Hwigyeongwon, with a high distribution of algae and lichen. The average biological damage grade was 3.3, the highest among the damage grades for weathering types observed in the sculptures. Due to the characteristics of Hwigyeongwon, it is prone to retaining moisture and soil, creating favorable conditions for various organisms to thrive. The different directions of Hwigyeongwon offer varying environmental conditions, which support the growth of diverse living organisms. Structurally, the tomb appears to be in relatively good condition overall. The integrated damage grade for each stone artifact was 2.5, indicating generally acceptable conditions. However, the stones representing the sheep and tiger showed relatively high weathering grades. This is attributed to severe biological damage and significant weathering of the stone objects. Although the stone artifacts in Hwigyeongwon have been exposed to outdoor conditions for approximately 200 years, some stone sculptures are relatively fragile and require cleaning to remove biological damage. Living organisms contribute to various forms of weathering in stone cultural heritage, which occurs over long periods and results in complex damage. Therefore, constant monitoring and comparative studies are essential. It is also necessary to prioritize conservation treatments through monitoring and efficient management of the stoneware environment.
