Abstract

Excavations have confirmed the presence of tombs fenced with Jugus in the Hoseo and Honam regions. The tombs fenced with Jugus found in the Honam region are strongly considered to have close connections with the emergence of large ancient jar coffin tombs in the basin of the Yeongsan River. This study examines the tombs fenced with Jugus in the Yeongsan River and determines their correlations with large ancient jar coffin tombs in the basin of the Yeongsan River. This study examines the developmental process of Jugumyos in the Yeongsan River and focuses on the gradual change of jar coffins from the main burial structure to the additional burial structure in a process to verify the development toward large jar-coffin ancient jar coffin tombs. For this reason, the study examined the current distribution of Jugumyos in the Yeongsan River. A total of nine forms were set for Jugumyos according to planar form and main burial structure. After checking chronology based on their pottery, the study divided the developmental process of Jugumyos in the Yeongsan River into four stages based on the changing patterns of each of the forms: the appearance of Jugumyos (Period Ⅰ), the development of Jugumyos (Period Ⅱ), the popularity of Jugumyos (Period Ⅲ) and high-mound ancient tombs (Period Ⅳ). Jugumyos usually had pit burial facilities as the main burial structure and jar coffins as the additional burial structure. Devoted jar coffins were used as the main burial structure in some Jugumyos. This culture of using a jar coffin as part of the burial structure continued. In the basin of the Yeongsan River, in particular, the jar coffin-based main burial structure ultimately gained the upper hand in the hierarchy. In addition, large ancient jar coffin tombs were developed and maintained for a certain period of time. The findings of this study demonstrate a connection in the form of Jugumyos with a jar coffin buried in the main burial structure between the Jugu-onggwanmyo and the large ancient jar coffin tombs in the basin of the Yeongsan River. There is a good chance that the tombs of the Yeongsan River would gradually develop into large high-mound ancient jar coffin tombs with many jar coffins buried in the mound through horizontal and vertical expansion.
