Abstract
The area around the Seosan Bowonsaji temple site is composed of Daebo granite in the Jurassic period, and mainly shows light gray medium to coarse grained biotite granite, leucistic and pinkish granite. The Five-story Stone Pagoda at the Bowonsaji temple site is a Buddhist pagoda with historical and academic values, and it was made using relatively homogeneous granite. The stones of the pagoda are almost identical biotite granite, light gray in color with a medium grained equigranular texture, and the same type granite was used for the Stone Basin, the pillar stones of the Flagpole Supports, the seated stone of the main Buddhist hall site and some basement stones in the temple site. The magnetic susceptibility of these granites are almost the same from 0.011 to 0.097 (mean 0.040)×10-3 SI units. However, the pedestal stones of the Flagpole Supports, the some basement stones of the main hall site, the stones for Stele and Stupa of State Preceptor Beopin at the temple site are different rocks from those of the Five-story Stone Pagoda. In order to interpret the provenance of stones for the Five-story Stone Pagoda, the geographic coordinates and similar rocks were explored by dividing the nearby area into the Rock-carved Buddha Triad in Yonghyeon-ri, the Hwangsan Campground and the Yonghyeon Natural Recreation Forest. Many large stones are distributed throughout the area, and they are typical Jurassic granite of the same type as the rocks of the stone pagoda. They are granites with almost identical occurrence, color, texture and mineral composition, and have the same magnetic susceptibilities. Considering that there are ancient quarrying traces on the granite in the Yonghyeon Natural Recreation Forest area, there is a high probability that it was a supplying site of stones. This area is rich in high-quality granite, including the movement, location and space of the quarrying stones, as well as the ease and quality. Therefore, if a replacement stones are needed in the future, the stone supply system of the study can be reviewed to utilize granite distributed in the Yonghyeon valley.
