Abstract
The Joseon royal family produced white porcelain taeho (placenta) jars in government kilns. These are ceremonial vessels used to enshrine the placenta after birth. However, due to a lack of research data, the history of white porcelain placental jars used by the Joseon royal family is quite limited. Recently, several white porcelain placental jars have been excavated from government kiln sites, making it possible to estimate the production period of jars housed in museums and other institutions. This has allowed us to examine the production patterns of Joseon royal placental jars and the evolution of their lids. First, the white porcelain taeho (placenta) jar used by the Joseon royal family featured a C-shaped ring on the shoulder. They were composed of an inner and outer container, each with a perforated lid and a jewel- or button-shaped handle. White porcelain jars were not made in government kilns whenever needed, but were made in advance to be used for several years and stored until they were needed. Second, the shape and height of the lid of the taeho (placenta) jars changed over time. Those with an overall flower-shaped lid or an engraved pattern on the outside were produced before 1482. The height of the inner container decreased to 25.0 cm or less from 1482, and the height of the outer container decreased to 30.0 cm from 1534. From the 17th century, the height gradually decreased. The inner port was less than 20.0 cm and the outer port was around 22–25 cm. Then, from 1782, it was decreased to 18.7 cm, and the ring began to be located in the center of the fuselage. Thirdly, the lid of the taeho (placenta) jar changed depending on the firing method and the support. The lid (Type IB) with the handle facing downward and a hanging pin was made before 1480. Representative lids are those excavated from the placenta chambers of the princes of the King Sejong Dynasty and the crown prince (King Danjong Dynasty). Among the lids (type IIA) with the handle facing upward and made using a ring-shaped pin, there is a Buncheong ware lid made in the first half of the 15th century. The lids with the handle facing upward and made to support a standing axe (Type IIB) were made after 1480. In addition, lids with the handle facing upward and made by supporting a cylindrical disc-shaped clay mold (type IIC) have been confirmed to be made in the first half of the 16th century, and lids with the handle facing upward and made by supporting a discarded porcelain mold (type IID) have been confirmed to be made from Inseonggun (1588-1628). In particular, the taeho (placenta) jars produced in Joseon government kilns were not made by placing them in a sagga, but by placing them one by one in a chimney and firing them.
