Abstract
This study scientifically verifies oral histories regarding the quarry site of stones used in the construction of Hwaho-ri Village, Jeongeup, a rural exploitation site during the Japanese colonial period. The stones used in the construction of Hwaho-ri Village are predominantly porphyritic biotite granodiorite, exhibiting a pinkish to light gray hue with feldspar phenocrysts. The rock is composed of quartz, alkali feldspar with a faint pinkish tint, plagioclase, and biotite, with well-developed from 1 to 3cm in length alkali feldspar phenocrysts and felsic veins. Magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate a range of 7.9~18.8 (×10-3 SI unit), with an average value of 12.7 (×10-3 SI unit). The Baeksan Mt. mentioned as a potential stone source, is located west of Hwaho-ri Village in Yonggye-ri, Baeksan-myeon, Buan-gun. The magnetic susceptibility of the Baeksan rock falls within the range of 10.0~15.8 (×10-3 SI unit). The rock composition of Baeksan is porphyritic biotite granodiorite, similar to that of the Hwaho-ri stone structures. Key mineralogical features, such as perthitic feldspar phenocrysts with Carlsbad twinning, quartz exhibiting undulatory extinction, orthoclase with minor microcline, plagioclase with oscillatory zoning and albite twinning, are identical between the two sites. Additionally, the geochemical characteristics of the Hwaho-ri stone and the Baeksan rock show similar trends, further supporting their correlation. A defunct quarry site was identified on the northwestern slope of Baeksan Mt., approximately 2.5 km in a straight-line distance from Hwaho-ri Village. These findings suggest that the stones used in constructing Japanese farmhouses in Hwaho-ri Village during the colonial period were sourced from Baeksan.
