Abstract
This article examines the influence of various media use on Korean female voters’political knowledge and political participation. In particular, this study attempts to see whether the ‘knowledge gap’and ‘participatory gap’would occur as a result of interaction between media use and educational level. Analyzing data collected in Seoul during the 2004 Korean National Election, we found the significant role of newspaper, television and Internet news media use in predicting Korean women’s political knowledge and political participation. In particular, active attention to Internet news media was significantly related to female voters’intention of both online and offline political participation even after controlling for conventional news media use. Also, the result of testing ‘knowledge gap hypothesis’did not show the evidence that media would produce gaps in the level of Korean women’s political knowledge. On the contrary, we found the possibility that Internet news media use could reduce the intra-group participatory gap of female voters. The study suggests that future studies continue to pay closer attention to the role of education and new media use together in the production or reduction of knowledge and participation gaps of Korean women in various political settings.
