Abstract

Viewers' online reviews of the early episodes of TV shows are one of the most important sources of information for predicting future audience ratings. The marketing literature has analyzed the volume and valence of reviews to predict market outcome. However, valence analysis has a limitation, as it converts text data into a one-dimensional numerical value. On the other hand, topic modeling has the advantage of increasing the depth of the analysis and performing detailed analysis on a topicby-topic basis. In this study, we aim to use topic modeling to predict the average ratings of TV episodes by analyzing viewers’ online comments about early episodes. For this purpose, we collected 118,641 online comments on early episodes of 135 TV dramas broadcast domestically in South Korea and classified each comment into one of 15 topics using latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA). We then analyzed whether there was any statistical association between the proportion of a specific topic and average audience ratings. Results show that topics containing slang and provocative words, those that mention “acting,” “story,” and “director,” and those with weak criticism were negatively associated with average ratings. On the other hand, topics that include praise and those that criticize the content were positively associated with average ratings. This study provides decision makers in the TV industry with a tool for predicting future TV ratings through analysis of early viewer reviews.
