Abstract

This study explores reaction video culture as the mixture of users’ activities of consumption and production. In intending an empirical analysis, K-Pop reaction videos are approached, in terms of attention economy. Reaction videos are considered as the composition between consumers’ passiveness/producers’ activeness, mass media contents/user-generated contents. The resource of global reaction culture, consuming and producing reaction videos on Youtube is found in television. As distributed from television through N-screens, music videos further are seen to initiate active users’ activity of making and consumers’ appreciating reaction videos. Moreover, reaction as the uniqueness TV audience culture is remediated in reaction videos, and produced and consumed as part of affective labour. This process of creation and transformation of attention to reaction videos is also that of development of attention to K-Pop and of its struggling for cultural recognition.
