Abstract
In this study, I have attempted to figure out how positive rational acceptance, avoidance, appearance fixing, which are coping strategies for changes in body image caused by surgery, are affected by the level of seriousness of surgery, intentional rumination and social support perception. The participants for this study are 124 women including patients from breast cancer self-help groups having total mastectomy, outpatients of plastic surgery having breast-reconstruction. After path analysis, it was revealed that subjective surgery seriousness level had positive indirect effect on positive rational acceptance fully mediated by intentional rumination. Surgery seriousness level had direct positive effect on appearance fixing. seriousness level of body change had direct positive effect on positive rational acceptance and avoidance. Next, social support perception had direct negative effect on avoidance. This study has significance in that, realizing that worries about body image persisted even after posttraumatic growth was reported, it looked into coping strategies depending on cognitive and social resources and tried to seek psychological counseling methods to reduce worrying and help patients accept new body images from the feministic point of view.
