30대 남녀의 성공욕구와 성형의도의 관계에서 대상화된 신체의식의 매개효과 차이

초록

외모 가꾸기는 개인의 자존감과 행복에 바람직한 영향을 미친다. 그러나 무분별한 외모집착에 의한 과도한 성형은 오히려 심리적, 신체적 건강을 해칠 수 있다. 본 연구는 사회적 성공욕구와 대상화된 신체의식이 성형의도와 어떤 관계를보이는지 탐색하였다. 특히 여성 뿐 아니라 남성에 대해서도 대상화 이론을 바탕으로 성공욕구 및 대상화된 신체의식과 성형의도와의 관계를 설명하려 하였다. 이를 위해 서울, 경기 지역 30대 남녀 246명의 성공욕구, 대상화된 신체의식 그리고 성형의도와 관련된 자료를 분석하였다. SPSS 18.0을 사용하여Baron과 Kenny(1986)가 제안한 절차에 따라 성공욕구와 성형의도의 관계에서대상화된 신체의식의 매개효과를 검증하였다. 연구결과, 성공욕구와 성형의도의 관계에서 대상화된 신체의식의 매개효과가 성별에 따라 다름을 보여주었다. 30대 남성의 경우, 성공욕구의 성형의도에 대한 직접효과는 유의하지 않았고, 대상화된 신체의식을 통한 간접효과만 유의하였다. 그러나 30대 여성의 경우, 성공욕구가 성형의도에 유의한 직접효과만을 보였다. 과도한 성형의도를 경험하는 개인은 성에 관계없이 사회와 문화에 의해 강요된 외모에 대한 기대감과성공욕구에 대하여 인식할 필요가 있다. 이러한 인식은 무분별한 성형의도로 인한문제를 극복하는데 도움을 줄 수 있을 것이다.

Abstract

Improving one's beauty has desirable effect on one's self-esteem and happiness. However, excessive plastic surgery due to immoderate obsession with appearance could harm psychological and physical healths. We examined how this phenomenon would be related to success desire and objectified body consciousness(OBC). We conducted a survey of 261 men and women in their 30s in capital area regarding success desire, OBC and plastic surgery intention. We conducted hierarchical regression analysis to investigate mediation effect of OBC on the relationship between success desire and plastic surgery intention. This study showed the difference in mediation effect of OBC on relationship between success desire and plastic surgery intention by sex. In the case of men in their 30s, success desire had indirect effect on plastic surgery intention through OBC. However, among women, success desire had both direct and indirect effect. The study showed the relationship among the success desire, OBC and plastic surgery intention in not only women but men. Individuals experiencing immoderate plastic surgery intention should be aware of appearance expectation and success desire forced by the society and culture. This awareness help them overcome the problems by immoderate plastic surgery intention.
