탈북은 여성의 비율이 압도적으로 높은 ‘젠더적’(gendered) 현상이다. 북한이탈여성은 한국의젠더구조 속에 편입되는 과정에서 특정 이미지로 재현되는데, 이를 극명하게 들여다볼 수 있는 영역중 하나가 결혼시장이다. 현재 한국에는 30~40곳의 북한이탈여성 전문 결혼정보업체가 운영 중인것으로 파악되며, 업체들은 과거 결혼상대로 기피되었던 북한이탈여성의 결혼적합성(marriageability) 을 높이기 위해 여러 장치를 마련한다. 본 연구는 북한이탈여성이 결혼시장에서 어떻게 ‘바람직한’ 배우자감으로 재현되는지의 양상을 살펴봄으로써 한국사회의 성(性)적, 이념적 편견의 다층적 갈등구조를 탐색하는데 목적이 있다. 20곳의 북한이탈여성 전문 결혼정보업체 웹사이트를 분석한 결과는 세 가지로 요약된다. 첫째, 북한이탈여성은 가부장제의 젠더 위계를 거스르지 않는 순종적인 여성임이 강조되었다. 둘째, 북한이탈여성은 자유를 위해 목숨을 걸만큼 용맹한, 강한 행위주체성(agency)의 소유자로 묘사되었다. 셋째, 북한이탈여성이 ‘안전한’ 결혼상대자임을 강조하기 위해신원보증인으로써의 정부의 역할이 강조되었다. 즉, 결혼시장에서 북한이탈여성의 이미지 재현은가부장제라는 젠더구조와 반공･반북이라는 이념구조가 교차하는 지점에서 이뤄지며, 북한이탈여성은 이 두 개의 사회구조에 철저히 순응하는 존재로 묘사된다. 일반적으로 혼종결혼(intermarriage) 은 상이한 두 집단 간의 통합의 정도를 가늠하는 대표적 지표로 활용되어온 만큼, 본 연구는 남남북녀 부부 결혼의 시작점이라고 할 수 있는 새터민 결혼정보업체 분석을 통해 북한이탈주민의 사회통합 양상을 이해하는데 기여하고자 한다.
Abstract
This study explores how the images of North Korean women defectors are represented in the South Korean marriage market by analyzing promotional websites of marriage broker agencies that specialize in pairing North Korean women and South Korean men. Examining twenty promotional websites of these companies reveals that North Korean women are described as docile, feminine, family-oriented traditional women who sacrifice themselves for their families. They are constructed as non-threatening to the prevailing gender hierarchy in marriage, which inevitably undermines the agency of North Korean women. At the same time, their political motivation for defection is exaggerated. Their defection is advertised as the epitome of courage and resistance, and their desire for freedom is overstated, which is to clear the concern about North Korean brides’ ideological purity. In this marketing process, matchmaking companies mobilize the South Korean government as a third-party reference guaranteeing that North Korean brides are a safe and better choice. All of these rhetorical schemes contribute to maximizing the marriageability of North Korean brides.
