Abstract
This study analyzed how the burden of household labor and work-life balance influence the career goals of married women and men with children. The independent variable, household labor burden, was measured by the time spent on household labor by individuals and their spouses, while work-life balance was assessed through individual experiences of work-family conflict, organizational support systems for work-life balance, and organizational culture that supports work-life balance. Using data from the second wave of the Korean Woman Manager Panel (1st to 3rd rounds), the study used a panel-ordered logit model to examine the career goals of 1,425 married women with children and 710 married men with children. The results revealed several key findings. The time spent on household labor by individuals and their spouses significantly influenced women’s career goals. As women’s household labor time increased, their career goals were more likely to decrease, whereas an increase in their husbands’ household labor time was associated with higher career goals for women. Work-family conflict also had a notable impact on women’s career goals. Negative work-to-family spillover negatively affected women’s career goal, while negative family-to-work spillover had a positive effect. Additionally, among work-family support systems, the use of workplace childcare facilities was found to positively influence men’s career goals.
