Abstract

This paper investigates the historical changes and fundamental features of Yongwangje which has been practiced at Deokjin pond in Jeonju. But it is impossible to make certain historically what the Jeonju Yongwangje has been. So this paper focuses on grasping the fundamental features of so-called Jeonju Yongwangje despite dealing with the historical changes of Jeonju Yongwangje. This article doesn’t deal with all the Yongwangjes which has been practiced at Deokjin pond, but Yongwangjes which has been practiced periodically. The periodical Jeonju Yongwangjes of the 1700s and 1970s can be known by related data. Regardless of historical distance, the data show the fundamental features of Jeonju Yongwangje: Jeonju Yongwangje has been practiced at Deokjin pond on April 8th in a festive mood. It shows a complex religious culture, and has been practiced as a independent ritual. And woman has a key part. It also covers various functions of other Korean popular Yongwangjes. In these respects Jeonju Yongwangje is an interesting case with its own peculiarities and generality. And its peculiarities broaden the limits of Korean popular Yongwangjes.
