Abstract

Many cities and provinces have been designating and managing intangible cultural assets so far. Under <The Act on the Preservation and Promotion of Intangible Cultural Assets> that has taken effect from 2016, metropolitan and provincial intangible cultural assets, too, have become major axes in our intangible heritages along with national intangible cultural assets. This author, however, deems that not much research has been done to examine metropolitan and provincial intangible cultural assets in general yet. Therefore, this study will present several issues associated with the status of metropolitan and provincial intangible cultural assets. According to the results of examining the status of designating metropolitan and provincial intangible cultural assets, first of all, there are metropolitan and provincial intangible cultural assets related to performing arts and national intangible cultural assets related to plays and festivals. Traditional techniques are frequently found both in national and also metropolitan and provincial cultural assets. Looking into how to name the items of metropolitan and provincial intangible cultural assets, this author concludes that it should be complemented in many ways further to add regional identity to them. According to the discussion over how to designate and manage national and also metropolitan and provincial intangible cultural assets when they are overlapped, first, it is needed to provide identity for each of the items. Although metropolitan and provincial intangible cultural assets have been designated quite a lot so far, it still needs complementation in terms of educating bearers or managing initiates. Based on the discussions performed here, this author expects more genuine discussion will be done about metropolitan and provincial intangible cultural assets afterwards. This researcher also adds the list of metropolitan and provincial intangible cultural assets that have been figured out so far in the latter part so that it can lay the stepping stone for further discussion.
