초록

The paper argues religion can become/play a positive, liberating and revolutionary role for social transformation in specific socio-economic -political contexts. This presumptive argument will be the principal idea and a socio-political-philosophical position of this paper. In order to substantiate this position, this paper specifically focuses on how and why Suun’s holistically inclusive concept of Heaven(至氣)/God(天主) has influenced and shaped Donghak’s Minjung-centered religious thoughts that later became the “mobilizing ethos” of the 1894 Peasant Revolution in Korea. This paper, however, mainly discusses logical differences between “A-type logic” and “E-type logic.” Most Western (and some Eastern)traditions belong to the category of A-type logic. However, Donghak,Process and some modern Western scientific ideas belong to that of E-type logic. This paper contends that the dualistic worldview that has dominated Western traditional thoughts in academia, culture, politics, particularly in religion are logically interrelated with today’s challenging issues of the world. This paper suggests the Donghak’s holistically inclusive, thereby symbiotically harmonious (in other words, inter-religious, inter-cultural,inter-ideological, and inter-traditional) thought tradition may serve as an alternative way of thinking to overcome the Western Christian dualistic worldview which is often criticized as a fundamental logical background, cause and ground of many challenging issues in global power struggles.
