Abstract

The term ‘Daesoon Studies’ denotes an interpretive learning aimed at elucidating and comprehending the faith of Daesoon Jinrihoe, in a reasoned and systematic manner. The pursuit of Daesoon Studies entails a scholarly examination of Daesoon Jinrihoe through an objective and inductive approach within the religious world. Starting from academic interest among external researchers in 1976, this research endeavor has since sought to explore the faith of Daesoon Jinrihoe in a scientific manner. Noteworthy publications in this field include The Journal of the Daesoon Academy of Sciences, as well as the official publication of the order, Daesoon Hoebo. The research conducted in the field of Daesoon Studies from 1976 to 2023 has resulted in the publication of 989 journal articles and 102 theses. By analyzing these academic achievements based on the publication status categorized by year and academic journal, the distribution of researchers, the classification of research topics utilizing the Smartian eight-dimensional approaches, and comparative studies, the subsequent tasks and prospects can be expressed as follows: first, as Daesoon Studies in theological research accounts for 73.9% of the total, it is essential for research in various fields such as ritual, experience, organization, and practice to make further progress. Secondly, only 6.8% of studies adopt a comparative research approach, therefore, there is a need for an increase in the adoption of this methodology. Thirdly, the number of researchers who have authored at least one Daesoon Studies article amounts to 220, whereas the number of individuals who have consistently pursued Daesoon Studies voluntarily is merely 8. However, with the steady rise in the number of researchers obtaining doctoral degrees in Daesoon Studies and the activities of the Daesoon Academy of Sciences and Academic Association of Daesoon Studies, the outlook for expanding the base appears promising. Fourthly, among the 989 articles, only 18 have surpassed 10 citations in the KCI database. Enhancing the qualitative standard of papers and developing ingenious issues and problem statements are forthcoming tasks. The increase in young researchers offers potential for addressing this issue. Fifthly, research should not only reflect contemporary academic trends but also encourage interdisciplinary or collaborative research among researchers. Sixthly, there should be a focus on internal data mining and concept clarification within the religious community. Externally, endeavors should be undertaken to advance the globalization of Daesoon Studies by actively engaging in renowned academic conferences, especially those held overseas, regardless of religious affiliations.
