초록
As the Korean cinema industry has developed throughout the years, key screenwriters such as Chang-dong Lee, Chan-wook Park, Jun-ho Bong, and Ki-young Kim produced many films on Korean society, diaspora, and cultural and social issues of Korea through the screen. Chang-dong Lee’s Burning and Chan-wook Park’s Decision to Leave cover the theme of the strangers in Korean society. In Burning Jong-su and Hae-mi portray the working class and Ben represents the upper class, and in Decision to Leave, Seo-rae portrays the Chinese immigrant. These figures let us question the social and cultural context of Korean society and our relationship with these socially dis/advantaged others. First, I will analyze the historical context of Korean cinema in the 21st Century, and then I will analyze the two films in terms of the carnival and biopower. Then, I explore the representations of the strangers in the two films. In conclusion, I will interpret the role and meaning of the representations of strangers in Korean film.
