현대 자본주의의 종교성 연구-발터 벤야민의 ‘종교로서의 자본주의’를 중심으로-

본 논문은 발터 벤야민이 제기한 자본주의적 시간의 종교성에 관한 착상을 산업자본주의에서 금융자본주의로 이어지는 자본주의 시대구분의 맥락 속에서 더욱 체계적으로 발전시키고자 한다. 이를 위해 우선 벤야민의 유력한 해석자인 조르조 아감벤의 메시아적 시간론을 살펴본다. 그리고 여기서 아감벤의 논점에 대한 중요한 반론으로 간주될 수 있는 모이셰 포스톤의 논의를 중심으로, 유대-그리스도교 전통의메시아적 시간과 산업자본주의 시대에 극대화된 자본의 역사적 시간 사이의 유사성을 지적한다. 포스톤이 설명한 바에 따르면, 트레드밀 동역학으로 특징지어지는 산업자본주의 특유의 시간성은 메시아적 시간을 말할 때 전제가 되는 크로노스적 시간과 구조적으로 동일한 시간성이 아니라, 오히려 기존의 자본주의에서 지배적이었던뉴턴적 시간의 틀 내부에서는 해결될 수 없는 다른 종류의 시간성을 함축한다. 이어서 아감벤과 다른 방식으로 벤야민을 재독해하기 위해, 종교학자 미르치아 엘리아데의 성스러운 시간의 개념을 중심으로 종교라 불리는 ‘사회적 실재’의 시간성을 검토한다. 엘리아데는 종교적 시간이 지닌 환원 불가능한 특성을 ‘가역성’으로 제시한다. 그러나 메시아적 시간과 마찬가지로, 성스러운 시간에 대해서도 동일하게 제기될 수 있는 문제는 금융화된 자본주의 시대인 오늘날, 자본의 투기적 시간에서도 시간의 가역성을 동일하게 발견할 수 있다는 사실이다. 결론적으로, 자본의 시간성이 종교적 시간성과 논리적으로 유사해지고 있는 현대 자본주의의 상황이 “오늘날의 대안적 종교현상”에 관한 신종교 연구에 어떠한 이론적 과제와 도전을 제기하는지 짚어본다.
Abstract
This article aims to explore Walter Benjamin’s conceptions of the religiosity of capitalist time in the context of the periodization of capitalism from industrial capitalism to financial capitalism. The discussion will begin by examining Giorgio Agamben’s theory of Messianic time, followed by Moishe Postone’s argument that draws parallels between messianic time and the historical time of maximized capital in industrial capitalism. Postone argues that industrial capitalism implies a different kind of temporality that cannot be resolved within the framework of conventional capitalism’s dominant Newtonian time. To reread Benjamin from a different perspective, this article will then turn to Religious scholar Mircea Eliade’s concept of sacred time to examine the temporality of the ‘social reality’ called religion. This article will address the question of whether the same reversibility of time found in the sacred time can be applied to the speculative time of capital in financialized capitalism. Finally, this article will discuss the theoretical challenges and issues that arise from the growing similarity between the temporality of capital and that of religion in contemporary capitalist society, particularly in the study of new religions about “today’s alternative religious phenomena”.
