Abstract
Following the assassination of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, the Japanese government filed a dissolution order against the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification(FFWPU). This study analyzes the background and key issues surrounding the dissolution order to examine the impact of governmental intervention on new religious movements. To this end, the history and activities of the FFWPU-Japan are reviewed, along with Japan’s Religious Corporation Law and past cases of state intervention in religion. Unlike the previous case of Aum Shinrikyo, this dissolution order is based on civil law rather than criminal law, raising questions about its legal justification. Furthermore, the study highlights the interplay between Japan’s ethnocentric tendencies and anti-Korean sentiments, which have influenced public perception of the FFWPU. Ultimately, this measure is seen as an attempt by the Japanese government to deflect responsibility by making the FFWPU a scapegoat, despite its lack of direct involvement in Abe’s assassination. Such state action sets a dangerous precedent for justifying governmental interference in New Religious Movements and poses a potential threat to religious freedom. Given its implications, this case is likely to become a significant reference point in future international discussions on religious freedom, underscoring the need for continued research and attention to this issue.
