Abstract

This study analyzes the prison text written by the person of “The Incident of Kim Hee Ro,” which sparked interest and controversy in both Korea and Japan between the late 1960s and the early 1970s over the issue of ethnic Koreans. I also analyze the compositions of Zainichi Korean writers who used the text as an opportunity for self-exploration. Through this study, I attempt to analyze the effects of “signature” and “testimony” on each text. Furthermore, I explore how the “problems of Zainichi Koreans,” which emerged through the event, are translated into the context of Korea-Japan relations after the normalization of Korea-Japan relations and how they are involved in the formation and transformation of the Zainichi discourse through the texts of Korean literature based on the event. The context in which the “problems of Zainichi Koreans” become visible in both the Japanese and Korean mainstream society was relevant to the writing conventions that highlight its eventuality. The name of the individual attached to such an eventuality was like a social stigma that equates the “problems of Zainichi Koreans” to the “Zainichi Koreans as a problem.” Being in prison meant being in a time and space where the validity of such a stigma was guaranteed. Therefore, by using their own names, which the Japanese society calls “anyhow” in prison, they rejected the stigma attached to their names and ultimately wrote using only “one name.” The proper name of Zainichi Koreans, who became “problematic Koreans” at a time when Korea-Japan relations, North Korea-Japan relations, and inter-Korean relations were heightened through the “problems of Zainichi Koreans,” was a political name that indicated disobedience.
