Abstract

Rural areas face a vicious cycle of declining transportation because of aging and population decline, which reduces services and lowers demand. Longer walks to stops worsen traffic safety due to poor lighting, narrow roads, and a lack of sidewalks. Demand-responsive transportation (DRT) offers flexible, on-demand service to reduce wait times and improve safety, especially for older adults. This study explored expanding DRT into full mobility-as-a-service by adding features to boost satisfaction and demand. A survey of Yangsan, South Korea residents ranked four new services: integrated transit app (most preferred), mobile social services, shared transportation, and delivery. Frequent users favored the app; commuters preferred shared transport. Older adults, who travel less and visit multiple places at once, prioritized delivery services to reduce a number of extra trips.
