Abstract
Worldwide effortshave been made to conductvarious demonstration projects on real roads to accelerate the commercialization of autonomous vehicles (AVs). However, traffic safety issues associated with mixed traffic streams needto be systematically addressed to facilitate the adoption of AVs. this study compareand analyzethe road traffic factors that affect safety performance of autonomousand manual driving. In addition, this study attempts to identify potential risk factorsincluding road infrastructure and traffic conditions. Behaviorcharacteristics and driving safety were evaluated using data collected from AVs that drove on actual roads in ADmode and MDmode. This study also a safety evaluation indicatorthe driving risk index)based onautonomous emergency braking system eventsto evaluate driving safety. Potential risk factors identified binomial logistic regression using road facility characteristics data. Statistically significant independent variables defined as potential risk factors. Illegal parking, existence of bicycle lane, and turning movements at intersectionwere identified as potential risk factors in AD mode. The results of this study are expected to provide a foundationfor the improvement of infrastructureand to establish policies to enhance traffic safety for AVs.
