영화 <박쥐>에서의 인식론적 한계와 신앙의 문제 - 헤겔의 『정신현상학』 서문을 중심으로 -

본고는 <박쥐>가 신앙의 문제를 다루면서 개인이 취할 수 있는 자세를 다양하게 보여주고 있다고 평가한다. 신부/상현은 신앙을 위해 욕망을 억누르고 정신적인 자유를 누리려 하지만 그에게 신이 직접 모습을 드러낸 적은 없다. 그런데 영화에서 신은 현실 세계에 직접 모습을 드러내지 않지만 신부/상현이 자신의 유한성과 죄를 깨닫는 과정을 통해 힘을 발휘한다. 신부/상현은 피를 쏟으며 속죄하고, 마지막에는 바다 위로 떠오르는 태양에 몸이 타면서 구원의 가능성을 보는 것이다. 한편 헤겔은 인간의 마음으로 절대지에 도달할 수 있다는 확신을 가지고 있었으며 그 과정을 부정의 부정을 통한 사유의 과정으로 설명해냈다. 이를 통해 본다면 <박쥐>는 한 인간이 이분법적 사고를 극복하는 사유의 과정을 주인공이 신의 대립자가 되고 다시 신과 화합하는 과정으로 서사화하고 있다.
Abstract
This study examines the spiritual journey of a Catholic priest in Park Chan-wook’s film Thrist (2009). In this essay, I argue that the narrative of Thrist reflects the progress of consciousness which Hegel discusses in The Phenomenology of Mind. Comparison with Hegel’s view on consciousness opens up our discussions for the protagonist’s transformation into a vampire. By incorporating Hegel’s view on dialectical process and the problem of religion in the Preface to The Phenomenology of Mind., this study aims to discuss how the film’s narrative can be understood in terms of an allegory of the Garden of Eden. Furthermore, this study proposes that Thirst demonstrates that the problem of binarism is a reason for epistemological limitation. This essay argues that Park Chan-wook, by showing the priest’s transformation into a vampire, re-writes the Western gaze and subverts the role of the West as a liberator and the non-West as a prisoner in his storytelling.
