Abstract
The purpose of the study is to survey and find out general types and devices adopted in the translation of Korean literary works into English both by Korean native translators and English native translators. For this purpose 100 English passages translated from 15 Korean short fictions and the same number of Korean original ones were selected and analyzed. What was found in the study are as follows: (1) Literal plus quasi-literal translational types were more frequently employed(24%) than expected. (2) To put the translational devices in the order of employment frequency: in terms of meaning, partial deletion(33.3%), and supplementary addition(21.8%), partial substitution(26.4%); in terms of form, reconstruction of the sentence(16.0%), and division of the passage(12.0%). (3) The devices of reconstruction of the sentence, and of division of the passage or text were used much more frequently by English native translators than Korean counterparts. (4) Totally, seven of a hundred English-translated passages(7%) were found, in meaning, to be much different from Korean original ones.
