This study examines teachers’ and students’ perceptions on the quality of good secondary English teachers in Korea and provides suggestions for the standard of what makes a good English teacher. Through the questionnaire, the researchers collected data from 115 English teachers and 367 students at middle and high schools. The questionnaire consisted of 39 items asking what quality English teachers need in terms of language instruction (English ability, teaching skills, and interactive skills), personality, and assessment. Teachers and students showed significantly different perceptions of English teacher’s quality depending on their current teaching/learning levels. Based on the results of the current study, the researchers suggest that more empirical studies like this current one are needed to develop valid standards of a good secondary English teacher’s quality in the future and to apply them into teacher selection and teacher training.
