Abstract
The purpose of this research was to investigate the effects of a ballet program incorporating Square Stepping Exercise (SSE) on physical and cognitive functions, as well as the social support network of elderly. A total of 34 elderly individuals from an elderly welfare center in Gyeonggi Province were recruited and assigned to either an experimental group (n=17) or a comparison group (n=17). The experimental group participated in an SSE-based ballet program, while the comparison group engaged in a general physical activity program provided by the center. The intervention was conducted twice a week for 60 minutes per session, totaling 12 sessions. Physical function was assessed in six areas: mobility, lower extremity strength, muscular endurance, balance, flexibility, and BMI. Cognitive function and perceived social support were also measured. Data were analyzed using IBM SPSS 25.0, employing Cronbach’s alpha for reliability and paired sample t-tests for statistical analysis. Post-intervention analysis showed statistically significant improvements in the experimental group’s mobility, lower extremity strength, muscular endurance, and balance. In addition, cognitive function improved significantly compared to the comparison group. The experimental group also showed significant improvements in all subdomains of social support. These results suggest that a ballet program incorporating SSE is effective in improving physical and cognitive functions as well as enhancing social support among older adults. It is recommended that such programs be systematically structured according to the physical and cognitive characteristics of the elderly to enhance their quality of life. Furthermore, future research should consider regional and cultural contexts for broader application.
