This paper explores the derivation of coordinate constructions in English within the framework of Optimality Theory (OT). In the literature of the generative grammar, many inviolable constraints, such as Law of the Coordination of Likes (LCL), Coordinate Constituent Constraint (CCC), etc., have been put forward to accommodate various types of the coordinate constructions in English. However, such rule-based approaches are not sufficient to deal with the nature of the coordinate constructions properly. In this paper, we postulate the ranking of the violable constraints to account for the coordinate constructions in a unified manner. The proposed OT-based approach could also reveal the nature of the coordinate constructions in English without resort to any rule-based constraints like LCL and CCC.
