초록

This paper is to study T. S. Eliot’s The Waste Land in which he dramatizes women attempting to surmount the claustrophobic, traditional code of domesticity, sacrifice, and dependence for women, and shows the emergence of New women, so-called flappers in the early 20th century. Women in Eliot’s works are situated in brutal, inequitable, and unbalanced relationships between sexes. Women suffer in ruined communication and infertile human relationships. They are the fallen in a space of male dominion: they are sexually exploited, threatened by patriarchal hierarchy, kept as prisoners in symbolic cages, and even literally or culturally get mutilated or murdered. That is why Eliot was known and criticized as a misogynist. However, Eliot takes a positive stance toward female characters in his works who keep trying to fight against patriarchal oppression on women and attempt to gain power to revenge and free themselves even through metamorphosis. As a great poet, Eliot writes his era depicting the great, astonishing change that the New women, especially so-called flappers, brought about in America in the early twentieth century.
