초록

This paper examines the meanings of true, pure, and unconditional hospitality by analyzing Karen Hesse’s Letters from Rifka using Jacques Derrida’s hospitality theory. It is the story of a Jewish refugee family’s forced emigration from their home. Hesse portrays Rifka Nebrot and her family’s escape from Russia in an interesting and heart-warming way. This work illustrates how people behave differently, with hospitality and hatred, toward Jews during Rifka’s travels from Russia through Poland and Belgium and then to the United States. In this work, Hesse strives to break racial and ethnic prejudice, one of the important conflict factors in children’s refugee literature. She asks young readers to give infinite love to others, such as the deprived, the excluded, the oppressed, and the poor. This is in line with Derrida’s pure and unconditional hospitality, that is, to welcome others warmly without any conditions and restrictions.
