Abstract

This study explores the issues of discrimination and exclusion that have become increasingly prominent in contemporary society, and seeks potential resolutions through picturebooks imbued with the imaginative power of community. In particular, the research analyzes picturebook narratives that move beyond traditional definitions of community, focusing on the formation of relationships with the Other and the potential for transformative hospitality. Community is not merely a shared space or a lifestyle pursued by those with common values; rather, it is a relational sphere that cannot exist without mutual trust and a sense of reciprocity. Drawing on Emmanuel Levinas’s notion of responsibility for the Other, as well as the community theories of Maurice Blanchot and Jean-Luc Nancy, this study emphasizes that community should originate not from unity and consensus but from difference, uncertainty, and the impossibility of total communication. Blanchot defines community as an “impossible relation,” which must be reconstituted in a way that acknowledges and preserves the uniqueness of each individual. This theoretical framework supports the idea that community members must overcome traditional hierarchies and embrace a receptive and tolerant attitude toward others. Based on this theoretical foundation, Chapters 2 and 3 analyze various picturebooks centered on community, examining how relationships with the Other are constructed and transformed. In particular, The Boy Behind the Houseby Hye-Ran Lee portrays a narrative in which community members form new relationships not by integrating outsiders through assimilation, but by entering the world of the marginalized themselves. The protagonist, Jun-beom, shifts from being a passive recipient of hospitality to an active host, which is examined through the lens of reverse hospitality. This narrative not only subverts traditional notions of community but also suggests the possibility of an expanded and inclusive understanding of communal life. Through these discussions, this study investigates the ethics of response and hospitality depicted in picturebooks and proposes new social implications for reimagining community in more inclusive and equitable terms.
