Abstract

Repetition and Deconstruction of Point of View in Ghost TrioLee, Su KyungAs his late plays show, Beckett's writing becomes more dependent on non-linguistic elements and visual images in the process of constant reduction towards minimalism. For Beckett, however, visual images are not the vehicle to overcome the expressive limitation of language. Like language, they also inevitably result in visual difference and distance. It means that Beckett, even in his avid trials with visual images, doubts the expressive possibility of them as he does that of language. The way he deals with visual images in Ghost Trio shows how Beckett deconstructs visual authority. The visual strategy Beckett uses for his second television play, Ghost Trio, to 'look again'. Directing F's action, V repeatedly requires to look at some objects in a familiar room. The more V does so, the more their coherence is lost. Such basic elements as walls, doors, floors, and windows lose their volume, color, and familiar pictorial values, as they are shown over and over by extreme close-up. Not only are these few common elements seen to be alien by the repetitional process to defamiliarize the familiar, but also the disintegration between language and visual representation is recognized. Beckett's televisual images subvert vision-centered, vision-generated models which trust visual representation. It is through such repetition that Beckett moves towards minimal visual images and more abstract form, pursuing all the while his aesthetics of expressing the maximum with the minimum.
