초록
This paper deals with what advantages in terms of quantity and quality of expression there are when we learn the content of movie scripts. It is often said that full of practical expressions are movies’ pride. However, Seo (2013) argues that what is practical for most people is not necessarily practical in terms of language development. In order to activate language development, we need expressions which allow us to find lexis within the expressions and later to be able to generate many new expressions from them. In this experiment, five scenes from Desperate Housewives, Season 3, Episode 9 were used. Subjects were four advanced level female college students. They were asked to choose the expressions that they preferred (‘preferential expressions’ - PE) and expressions that were relevant to the movie content (ERMC) separately. The findings showed that ERMC were chosen more often than PE. It was also found that student C chose more ERMC than the others because student C faithfully followed the story line. The others were more likely to choose culturally related, metaphoric and idiomatic expressions, indicating that their focus was more on language than on the movie contents. It is suggested that student C’s orientation was advantageous, leading to more improved language development.
