Abstract
This paper aims to elucidate Maxine Hong Kingston’s bilingual or bicultural translation along with the specific examples of Chinese Americans’ language situation. Chinese Americans have developed their own language, which is neither the Chinese language proper nor the standard English. The writer’s project of translating the Chinese American language and culture into English leads to transcribing what they speak into the written form as well as translating the minority language into the majority language. While she mainly translates in The Woman Warrior and China Men, Kingston directly shows the vivid forms of the Chinese American language such as Chinatown Chinese and Chinese immigrant pidgin English in Tripmaster Monkey. Through translation and showing the aural aspects of the Chinese American language, Kingston achieves bilingual and bicultural creativity and proposes a new, evolved English.
