In modern fashion, the general design with universality and the design that reflects the identity and characteristics of each country have world-class competitiveness and create high value-added. In order for Korean traditional costumes to be competitive in this trend. It is necessary to recreate our own costume design with universality suiting modern senses based on our spiritual cultural heritage. The purpose of this study is to present the direction and importance of design research using Korean traditional costumes through analyzing the trends of studies on design using Korean traditional costumes. Based on this, it is meaningful to carry out in-depth research activities in the field of design using Korean traditional costumes and to suggest future research and development directions. In order to grasp the trends of the studies on the design field applying Korean traditional costumes, this study selected five representative journals that published Korean traditional costumes, and analyzed the research data published from 2007 to 2017. In addition, the research data were classified into year, journals, and research subjects to analyze and identify their trends. The research on the design applying Korean traditional costumes was divided into sub-themes, and the thematic distribution was analyzed. As a result of this study, it is possible to present the future direction of research, and it is meaningful to provide the theoretical basis data for the follow-up study on Korean costume-applied design. Research on Korean traditional costumes has been gradually declining since 2008. Design application-related studies are published three to nine times a year, but the number was quite a few compared to the number of Korean traditional costume papers. In order to have the competitiveness of Korean traditional costumes in the future fashion industry, the theme of research in the design field should be diversified, and in-depth study should be continuously activated.
