초록

This paper focuses on a specific debate within the field of language development, one that concerns cross-linguistic variation in the usage of sentential subjects. In a non null subject language like English, all of the phenomena leading to subjectless sentences appear in the utterance-initial. In the embedded clauses, English-speaking adults never omit subjects but Italian-speaking adults do. With such phenomena, children exposed to null subject languages will shift their parameter, while those exposed to non null subject languages will not. But the subjectless sentence in child English are the result of the children posssessing null subjet grammars. To induce the parameter changes, syntactic explanation should be done to develope a theory of subject omission with the psychological plausibility of a parameter-setting model of syntax acquisition.
