초록

This paper explores how Philip Massinger’s The Renegado(1623-24) embodies the early seventeenth century English desires for and anxieties about profitable journeys to the Ottoman territories. More specifically, it investigates how this tragicomedy attempts in sexual and spiritual terms to establish Anglo-European superiority to the Ottoman powers on the basis of the imagined supremacy of a Christian man over a Muslim woman. In doing so, the paper particularly focuses on the dramatization of the Ottoman princess’s conversion to Christianity and her submission to the Venetian wooer, and then it goes on to argue that the play is a Eurocentric rewrite of early modern travel writings, whose anecdotes about renegade Christians or English Turks functioned as a constant reminder of the inferior status that early modern England occupied in the military, commercial, and religious exchanges in the Mediterranean regions.
