초록
This paper aims to read the femininity through ‘masquerade’ in Sarah Waters’ Tipping the Velvet. In psychoanalysis the term of masquerade was started by Joan Riviere and developed by Lacan. Riviere’s masquerade is to defend against the anxiety, Freud’s masquerade is to veil the lack of phallus in the case of an 18-year-old lesbian girl, and Lacan’s masquerade is related with sexuality in the Symbolic order. At first, this paper distinguishes phallus from penis and points to some feminists’ misunderstanding. And then it examines Nancy’s masquerades on stages and the signification of phallus in the Tipping the Velvet. Finally, this paper shows that masquerade is an another way to explain the femininity. Nancy’s male impersonation is to deny the feminine attributes to desire Other’s desire. Nancy’s masquerade evokes the question, ‘what is femininity?’ and her male impersonation paradoxically shows, ‘I am not a man!’.
