초록

This study is to discuss Toni Morrison’s description of violence in terms of representation. Opening the way to the causes of violence and their syndromes for her readers, Morrison represents violence through one speaker’s or multi-speakers’ single limited information of its tools, inner motives, traces, or multi-proves. That is because Morrison does not tend to describe violence in terms of facticity- or on-the-spot sense-based intuition and language. Therefore, her description of violence seems to set a high value on didactic and moral impacts of literary description of personal and social selves. Even so, it is difficult to say definitely that she organizes violence into a system of morality. Describing Cholly’s domestic violence and incest in The Bluest Eye, Humboldt’s sado-masochistic violence and Huxley’s violence in God Help the Child, and black men’s racial violence in Paradise, Morrison describes them within the framework of representation.
