초록

Gilles Deleuze has called Samuel Beckett’s Watt as the great serial novel in his now famous essay “The Exhausted.” He understands Beckett’s literature as a project to liberate literature from the fetter of the real resorting to the serial expression. Indeed, Watt is permeated with enormously diverse series in every element and level of the narrative such as words, characters and embedded narratives. Thus, serial enumerations and combinatorial relations abound in the work replacing conventional syntactical narrative relations. The essay discusses Watt focusing on some of the well known and widely discussed episodes. With ‘exhausting the possible’ as an aesthetic principle or category to elucidate the nature of Beckett’s serial expression, those episodes disclose the fact that Beckett’s intention is not just to parody the madness of reason as most critics have proposed but to tell the tale of the nothing as full potentiality of the virtual.
